The pocket in women's underwear: What is the purpose & why is it placed the way it is?

When it comes to women's underwear, you may have noticed that small pocket in the crotch area. It seems unobtrusive, but it serves an important function. Yet in many undergarments, it's not positioned correctly. Do you recognize that the crotch is often too small or poorly placed? Exactly. We noticed it too. That's why we did things differently.

In this blog, we explain what this pocket does exactly and why its placement is so important for comfort.

What Is the Purpose of the Hygienic Lining?

The hygienic lining provides an extra layer of fabric in the crotch area, which is important for hygiene and comfort. This layer helps absorb moisture, sweat, and natural vaginal discharge. Discharge is a normal and healthy part of the female body, and a good lining helps catch this comfortably throughout the day.

Additionally, the lining forms a protective layer between the body and outer clothing, reducing direct contact with rough fabrics and helping prevent irritation.

However, the lining in many undergarments is not optimally placed. Often, the pocket sits too far back and is too narrow. This is especially true for thongs. As a result, the skin at the front can still come into contact with external materials like jeans, and discharge isn't properly absorbed. This can lead to irritation or chafing.

Why We Designed It Differently

Because we had been puzzled for years by the discomfort of many undergarments, we wanted to do things differently. We, Rosa and Lois, started by designing thongs, but quickly realized that the same problems occur with other styles as well. That's why we rethought the design from the ground up.

Our underwear features a comfortable double lining made from a soft natural based fabric (you can read all about our natural materials here). This lining extends all the way to the top of the underwear and covers the entire sensitive area. We also made it wider so it doesn’t move as much. This allows the gusset to do what it is meant to do: protect the vulva from contact with external fabrics and effectively absorb moisture, sweat and natural discharge throughout the day.
